A minaudière is a small, structured evening bag designed to hold its form and be carried in hand. It's less a bag than a piece of jewellery you happen to hold.
The difference isn't size or price, it's structure. A conventional clutch — even a nice one — is usually built from a soft material over a light internal support, which is why it folds flat when it's empty. A minaudière doesn't fold. It's built on a solid frame that holds its shape whether it's full or empty, and it closes with an actual mechanical clasp rather than a zip or magnetic snap. Platero's Svarangana Royale, for example, closes with a sculpted push-lock clasp set into the frame itself; the Koi pieces close with a hinged clasp at the head.
That's really the whole distinction. A minaudière is built like a small object first and a bag second.
Because it holds its shape, a minaudière can be set down on a table at an event and still look complete — it doesn't slouch or lose its form the way a soft clutch does. That's also why these pieces tend to get chosen for occasions where the bag itself is meant to be noticed, rather than just carried: weddings, receptions, festive evenings, the kind of night where you'd set it down next to your plate rather than tuck it under your arm.
Structure is the shared trait, but the actual forms vary. Svarangana Royale is built on an oval frame, hand-engraved with a scene across its surface — the piece we'd point to first if someone asked what the category looks like at its most ornamented. Kanak Royale takes a flatter, trapezoid shape with edge-to-edge scrollwork and a beaded fringe. Azure Koi, Ruby Koi and Onyx Koi move furthest from a traditional bag shape altogether — each is cast into a fish form rather than engraved onto a flat frame, with a hinged clasp at the head that opens to a genuine interior compartment, so despite the sculptural shape, each still functions as a real clutch.
There's no strict rule here, but the pattern is fairly consistent: a minaudière suits occasions where you want the bag to read as part of the outfit rather than a functional afterthought — a wedding, a formal dinner, an evening where everything else you're wearing is already considered. For something you'll carry more casually or need to fit more into, a softer, more expandable bag is usually the more practical choice.
